Being an England supporter... for a day

Usually when India is not playing a match, I support the underdog in a clash.
Which meant I had to support England in today's Super 8 encounter.
Hmm.

So I did the next best thing and tossed a coin.
My bad luck, someone up there wanted me to support England. (I have to admit, I cheated a little; whenever Rudolph bowled well/fielded, I cheered!)
What a performance. Tch tch.

You know when KP does not fire, its usually a pretty ordinary performance by England.
Though, their bowling was much better I admit.

And then the post-match analysis by Nasser H and Ian Botham.

Uff!

Nasser went on and on about how its not the experience in the IPL, but the fact that you need "big lads" like Smith, and Gayle to hit those big sixes and then the "wristy" players like Dilshan to nudge around and take singles.
(I might be watching a different Dilshan, because he has been hitting sixes and fours alright!)
I thought that the "big lads" issue was put to rest in the last T20 championship. Wait who was in the finals? Hmm. India and Pakistan.

Anyway, too much of a headache this being an English supporter.
I need some tea and crumpets to cheer myself up.
Ciao.

14 Maidens bowled!!:

The English bowling seemed better because the South Africans did not want to take any risks.

yes, it is difficult to support England with their erratic performances.

Unbelivable ! You've admitted to supporting England for a day and then you also wrote on the ' match'!!! Shock, Horror :-)

I just 'hope', the rest of the group matches pan this way. India to beat England and South Africa ,but lose to West Indies, West Indies to beat England as well but lose to South Africa.

Then it will come down to NRR, and this lame batting effort of South Africa should come back to bite them bad :-)

True Krish, the Saffers did not stretch themselves. However, at least the English were comparably better in their bowling.
And I always find Broad to be a hard competitor.
"Erratic" is the word for England. Reminds me of India in the 90s with the overdependence on Sachin.

Welcome to the blog.

You won't believe this, but I was about to write a post on the EXACT same thing - rooting for England, supporting the underdog and all that.

But yeah, it is too much of a headache! To support England you need to have a very high threshold for pain. Their batting today was sheer torture (which somehow made it compulsive viewing).

TG,

LOL.
I thought you were not watching the tournament?
;-)

Oh so there is something +ve in all this. Yup I hope the NRR issue comes back to haunt the Saffers.

I don't mind the Kiwis/Lankans winning if India are eliminated, but not the Saffers. Just something about that team.

Of course if the Windies win, it'll be some sort of a miracle and I guess no one will hold it against them!

Suhas,

:-)
You should still, you know write about supporting the underdog.

Their batting today was sheer torture (which somehow made it compulsive viewing).

LOL.

Silly cliched statement - you can take Aus out of a tournament, but you can't take cricket out of me :-)

What to do - having over dosed on cricket for the best part of two decades, it's a drug I NEED to HAVE :-)

Plus, when England are so HOPELESS, as a die hard Aussie supporter, it is not something to MISS.

As for Winners -

S Af - No Tks,
England - You're kidding ,
SL - With a bloke like Murali in the team - hell NO,
Pak - ahem they just don't seem to have it.
WI - nah they couldn't. CL 2004 was shock that they still haven't recovered from :-)

The leaves NZ and India. Yeah ideally would take one of them.. Will they ???

TG,

Cliches work, especially if they tell the truth.
:-)

India seem vulnerable to me... I am sure others have noticed it too. You know their death bowling.

And with Jessie gone home, and Ross and Vettori on the bench dunno if the KIwis will grab their chances. They SHD have won that match against SA.

South Africa is looking more and more ominous. I think our best strategy against them would be to keep Kallis on strike as long as we can without getting him out. He seems to have a penchant for unbeaten, run-a-ball fifties. Go on, Jack, get one against us, too :-)

Completely unrelated, but has anyone seen this?

Adduction? Abduction? Hyper-extension? Or plain old chucking? How long before he gets reported? :-P

Perfect click-timing by the photographer, I'd say. Completely unintentional, I am sure.

Looks more like constipation to me :D

Why is his landing foot pointing to backward point? I thought it should point at the batsman?

I am asking because I'm not seeing the games live. Does he rotate the foot along with the hip when he releases the ball? I hope he does, for the sake of his foot :-/

Nasser Hussain is basically the polished English version of Mohinder Amarnath on crack.

I'm all for supporting underdogs, but gosh, can't there be some excitement in their approach to the game?!

@Suhas- great point!! :-) I found myself numb, planted in between my room and the tv, for a LONG time!

@ TG - Aussie supporter in cricket and a Rooney fan ? :-) That is just a mean combo man!

Sharath,

Right now the strategy would be to fix Dhoni's SR!
